Roadmap: What's coming next
I've had a few people reach out with questions about what our plans are going forward and asking us to add certain features. So rather than letting the changelog and the occasional hint in a post be the only record of where we are heading, I've sat down and written it all out. The roadmap currently features a mix of items that I personally have a need for, requests that others have made and the pieces needed to make Dungeon Weave a product people can buy with confidence.
This post is a snapshot of my current priorities and is subject to change as the need arises. This roadmap also makes no promises on timelines, Dungeon Weave only has a small team behind it, and we have many concurrent streams of work (the backlog is over 150 items deep right now), so I'd rather show you direction than give you a date I can't back up.
Our near-term work currently has three different strands. These are features which are actively being worked on or planned for, and you should see some of them before the end of the year.
Current projects
New Player application
I'm currently a DM for two Adventurers League style campaigns. These groups have a rotating set of players with various experience levels and preferences. One of the common things I'm encountering is players struggling with their character sheets. Sometimes it's new players spending lots of time searching through their character sheets for an important ability in combat, other times it's experienced players getting frustrated with digital tools which lack the flexibility to easily add homebrew items and abilities. I also have my gripes with the tools I use as there's no easy way to have alternative version of characters for playing in different games (and for those without a D&D Beyond subscription, you quickly run out of slots).
I think we can do better. So much so, that I currently have one of the team dedicated to building out our own character sheet application as the first part of the player facing tools for Dungeon Weave. We've already got a few bits built, so I hope to be able to write another post in a couple of weeks with a sneak peek of the tool.
Dungeon Master application
For all the Dungeon Masters out there, don't worry, we've not forgotten you. Dungeon Weave was built for you and we are continuing to build out new features. Over the last week, I've made a lot of small fixes and quality of life improvements based on your feedback and my own experience using the tool. List filters went out live last week and I have a number of small improvements and fixes to sources which will be live soon.
For the bigger features, you may have seen the work we've done so far on shops. This was put live recently as we thought the feature, as it is, would be useful already, but we're not done with it yet. The main thing missing is the ability for players to sell items back to shops but there is also some backend housekeeping that needs finishing up as well. A tricky part about selling to a shop is to make a usable UI, so we're currently working on a few prototypes to see what works best.
The features you won't have seen yet but are high up on my wish list are time tracking and loot tables. Time tracking is of particular importance to me as I'm currently running an Acquisitions Incorporated campaign and the party has multiple business interests on the boil at one go. Currently, keeping track of when each of them needs attention is almost a full time job itself (and I don't have a majordomo to handle it for me). Loot tables are also a useful addition, they'll build on some of the work done for shops to allow you to add loot to story nodes and easily transfer loot to the party when it's discovered.
New design and UI
I started off building Dungeon Weave for my own personal use. Not being much of an expert in design, I picked an off-the-shelf admin panel template to make something which was functional and required little effort to implement. Now that I've launched Dungeon Weave for everyone, we need something better. We have a graphic artist on the team who has put together some awesome artwork for the home page and blog and has also been working on the new design elements used on them. The home page and blog are showcasing only a small amount of what we've been working on and when we reveal the first screenshots from the new player application, you'll get to see the rest.
We plan to roll the new design out to the DM application as well but there is a lot of work to make this happen, so it's likely to be further out or done in stages.
Longer-term plans
We have a pretty solid vision for what the next year of development will hold. These are just a few of our big projects that we hope to tackle in 2027.
Marketplace & free content
I would put the marketplace and free content at the top of my long term project wish list. One of the biggest challenges facing DMs can be finding good content to run. Even when you purchase an official adventure supplement, there's still a lot of prep work to do to manage running the game. With the marketplace I intend to change this.
Initial plans will be for it to host free and paid content from the Dungeon Weave team, fully prepped and ready to run. A second phase will also allow for user-submitted content and finally a payout system to allow you to also sell content via our platform.
Support for other systems & versions
The core features in Dungeon Weave focus around weaving together story threads and planning for traps, monsters and encounters. A lot of this work is fairly agnostic to the actual role-playing system you play in. The main parts that differ come in running encounters themselves and the specific mechanics and stats for monsters, items and traps.
Going forward, I plan to continue to fully support both D&D 5e and D&D 5.5e, but I'd also like to add support for other systems, chiefly Pathfinder and Daggerheart once the demand from DMs for these systems is there.
Adventurers Leagues
I DM for two Adventurers Leagues and I really like the format but Dungeon Weave isn't currently set up very well to handle the one-shots with completely different parties each time. I have a few ideas in mind to make managing this easier as well as integrating some of the spreadsheets and tools I currently use into Dungeon Weave. This will probably be tied to the Pro DM level package once that's available. I also plan for it to come with the ability to invite other DMs to run games in your league, so that only one of you will need to have a Pro DM subscription to run your games.
That's it for now
The next update you'll see is the player application, and I'll write up a sneak peek in a couple of weeks. Until then, if you're running Dungeon Weave and something's holding you back, let me know: that's what the backlog is for.
